Backflip Studios' Julian Farrior was here in attendance at GDC 2011 this week. His company has been doing quite well lately, and he tells me that they've recently hit 85 million downloads across all of their free apps, with over 23 million monthly active users. In plain terms, that means that tons of people have downloaded Backflip's apps (like Paper Toss, Ragdoll Blaster and the popular NinJump), and they're playing them often as well. 

 As I heard at last year's conference, Farrior is all about experimentation, using paid downloads, freemium apps and a large, well-organized network of in-app advertising to drive traffic around and monetize his company's users.

 He has a relatively large slate of games due out in 2011, including four social games that we'll be hearing about later in the year, and a few games using various models that I got to see in action. Boss Battles was the first -- it was still in an early stage of development, but the idea is that Farrior wants to try to marry a scrolling arcade shooter (like Gradius) with the freemium business model. 

 The game will be a free download, and it will allow you to configure your ship and guns however you please in a series of the game's namesake boss battles, earning up XP and gems as you play. In-app purchases will offer ship customization and XP boosts, so you can pay nothing and grind your way up, or if you want to progress faster, you can put a few bucks in and go that way. The biggest feature about NFS: Hot Pursuit is NFS Autolog, which track player progressions and statistics compared to other player and recommends players events to play. In addition to its statistical system, Autolog also features Facebook-like speedwalls where players can post their comments and photos while in the game. This Autolog feature carried on in its next generation in Shift 2: Unleashed. NFS: Hot Pursuit has received some of the best reviews of the series, which generally praise the Autolog feature of the game and the cop vs racer chases. Hot Pursuit’s gameplay is set in the fictional Seacrest County, an open world in which players can compete in several types of races. Players can also compete online (except in the wii version), which includes additional game modes as “Hot Pursuit”, “Interceptor” and “Race”. The game features a new social interaction system called “Autolog”, which is a network that connects friends for head-to-head races and compares player stats for competition. 

The game also features paid downloadable content in the form of new cars, new race and pursuit events, and new trophies/achievements. Hot Pursuit was well received by critics at E3 2010 and was most notably awarded with “Best Racing Game” from Game Critics Awardsas well as several other media outlets.  There isn’t much music to speak of in Commandos, and the sound, though authentic, is sparse. And though the commandos sound great and become immediately distinguishable through their speech, they have disappointingly few speaking lines. The Germans don’t have a lot to say either. An unobtrusive and clever interface borders the screen, showing the various tools in the selected commando’s knapsack, any of which can be selected with the click of a mouse. However, this interface is mostly for show; it’s quicker just to hit the appropriate keyboard hotkey to select your green beret’s combat knife for example and in Commandos, every moment counts.

 Moving your men is as simple as clicking the desired destination or double-clicking to make the commando run. You need to micromanage everybody, and no one will move an inch without your express orders. This isn’t a problem; just keep your idle men hidden at all times and you’ll be OK. To be sure, Commandos is a good strategy game not so much because of its fine look and interface, but because it makes you think.

 You needn’t worry about real-time strategy protocol like fog of war and resources or having to restart from scratch every time you mess up (you can save whenever you like). Instead, you get a select group of specialists at your disposal, along with a concise yet informative mission briefing that clearly defines your task. You have nearly limitless reconnaissance data at your disposal; you can scroll all around the map, identify all enemy patrols, and even see each enemy’s field of vision represented onscreen through a sweeping colored cone. And so, you’ll always have your work cut out for you what you need to do is figure out exactly how to get the job done. 

Guards cannot hear your men moving, nor can they hear their fellows die by your silent weapons. But if they see any of your men, or witness anything suspicious, they’ll get riled up and you’ll be in serious trouble. To succeed, you must coordinate your troops. For instance, the marine is an adept killer, able to emerge from underwater instantly, armed and ready with knife and harpoon gun  but he needs the green beret’s brawn to dispose of the bodies. And if the spy can find an enemy uniform and distract the enemy, then the driver will be able to sneak past and steal a parked tank. The combinations aren’t always binary; solving certain situations in Commandos can be very complex and challenging but always logical and predictable.

 You cannot slow the game down or speed it up, and so you’ll occasionally need to employ a little dexterity and good timing. But these action elements only amplify the game’s visceral appeal and do not detract from its strategic core. You’ll also run into the occasional pathing problem trying to operate a large vehicle, but aside from that, Commandos controls just fine. Commandos contains a single linear campaign composed of 20 big missions.

 The linearity isn’t problematic; while there exists a best way to win each scenario, you always get plenty of room to be especially creative or just a little reckless. And because they’re well designed and open-ended, you’ll want to play most of them more than once. Any of these missions can be attempted cooperatively with up to five other players, each responsible for at least a single troop. However, the true pleasure in this game is coordinating the entire squad single-handedly, anticipating how a situation will transpire and watching it go according to plan or successfully improvising when things don’t go your way.\

 And what a pleasure  after you navigate your team through or past some 50-odd nonchalant German guards, destroy a vital enemy installation, and hijack a means of escape, you may well find Commandos sneaking its way to the top of your list.

Although it revolves completely around the 2002 Japan/Korea World Cup and as such doesn't deliver the sheer number of players, teams, and league and tournament options of FIFA's regular annual installments, FIFA World Cup 2002 is quite simply one of the most exciting PC sports games ever created. 

This is no small accomplishment considering how professionally appointed each previous FIFA has been. Yet when experienced back-to-back with last year's FIFA Soccer 2002 released a scant six months ago--FIFA World Cup 2002 is a completely different animal. Starting with the game's dramatic introductory sequence, you'll sense that EA wanted to unleash something new. The usual electronic/dance beats of chart-toppers such as Moby and Ministry of Sound have been exchanged for the powerful strings and crescendos and kettledrums of the critically acclaimed Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The menu system, which surely reached the peak of drabness in last year's model, is polished, colorful, and presented with pride. 

The new "everyone's game" component, wherein you can access real-life multimedia snippets concerning most every aspect of this year's World Cup, is especially enjoyable despite its low-grade video quality. FIFA World Cup 2002 presents 20 Japanese and Korean stadiums in all, each a seemingly faithful and certainly brilliantly rendered work of art, and the choice of day or night contests. Interestingly, the game does not offer inclement weather options. When the sides are selected and the go-ahead given, you'll take a dizzying ride from the top of the stadium to pitch level, taking in a profusion of visual treats along the way.

 Fireworks explode in the sky, laser effects dance all around, and a surging sea of spectators rises and falls as one. EA has adopted a high-contrast color palette for this edition, with greener grass, brighter daylight, darker night skies, punctuated lighting effects, and more vivid kits and thus has made the game look far more vibrant and alive than ever before.

In addition to all of the content from the original console game, Ultimate Box also includes all of Burnout Paradise's downloadable content released to date. First up, there's Codename: Cagney, which adds the Stunt Run, Marked Man, and Road Rage modes to online multiplayer. The Bikes pack adds two-wheeled racing and a day/night cycle to the series for the first time. And last, there's Burnout Party, the first paid-for content to hit the game. Gameplay options are largely unchanged from the console version and include normal race, Stunt Run, Marked Man, Road Rage, and Burning Route. For those new to the Burnout series, in Stunt Run you chain together drifts, jumps, and boosts to achieve combos; in Road Rage events you need to eliminate opponents by smashing them into traffic or objects; and in Marked Man you have to reach the finish line before your opponents can destroy your car. Burning Route consists of time trials from point to point, and by completing them you'll unlock an upgraded model of your current ride. Unlike in Burnout 3, The crash mode and aftertouch takedowns from Burnout 3 are missing from Paradise, but it does have the Showtime mode, which lets you take control of a wreck through the streets of Paradise City and rack up a damage bill in the process. The biggest new feature this time around is the Burnout Paradise Party Pack, which adds an offline pass-the-controller multiplayer challenge mode for up to eight friends. Once you've set up the number of players and game types, you'll compete in a series of minigames where you earn points for successfully passing a challenge or beating your opponents' scores. The Party Pack offers instant gameplay for when you and your friends don't want to compete in longer, more demanding events, and it consists of three challenge types: stunts, skill, and speed. Stunts are a collection of insane tricks, such as successfully landing a cliff-top jump. Skill challenges include driving into oncoming traffic with boost on for as long as possible. Speed challenges might have you smashing a few billboards and then racing back to the start within a designated time limit. The Party Pack is a great addition that finally brings offline multiplayer to Burnout Paradise.

Getting online is as simple as hitting a button during gameplay, at which point you'll join your friends or enter a random lobby. The online mode is seamless, and there are no loading times; you can drop in and out of online games at will. You can set up simple point-to-point races all over the city when hosting a multiplayer session, or tackle a Freeburn Challenge set by the developers, with different challenges depending on the number of players. Burnout Paradise included 350 challenges, and there are now an additional 140 challenges with the new packs. The challenge types are varied and include straight races, beat-the-clock events, jumping over other players' rides, and other more-complex multipart challenges, such as meeting at a designated place and racing a route to an end point while hitting specific jumps along the way. Challenges are a lot of fun, especially when you have a large group of friends to play with, and they give the online play a lot of longevity.

In the main Adventure mode, you have to Beat all 14 missions, while completing tasks in each one. These tasks vary from Destroying a few vehicles, or Racing/Battling a boss. World (map) Changes every 3 missions (1-3, Monument City, 4-6 Turbine sands etc.)

In the Challenge mode, you have to complete all 18 challenges. Each Challenge comes with various tasks, such as achieving "x" Stunt points, Collecting "x" gears, or reaching the finish before the clock hits 00:00. Along the way, New cars as well as new race/battle maps and weapons are unlocked.

The game also has a Drag Race mode, a Battle mode, and a Joyride mode. The Drag Race and Battle modes are both single-player and multiplayer (except in the PC version of the game). The Joyride, in essence, is free roam You can also unlock cars in Joyride by collecting all ten gears or finding the hidden key in each map.

There are also eight different cheats that can be unlocked.
